Blending in

This long overdue cartoon first caught shape while I was thinking about how idiotic some people tend to be nowadays and how you’d have be at least the same amount of stupid if you wanted to blend in with the crowd… but hey, it’s all in good fun, right?! The original sketch was done in ballpoint pen and colored pencils.

Coming back to life

Always wanted to try out the liquid splatter effect on something and what better subject than the popular Scarlet Macaw. This piece took me about 5 hours to complete and I am pleased with the overall experiment and there is also a wallpaper version available. Title inspired by Pink Floyd’s song from The Division Bell, playing when I finished the work.

Cotton mouth

Initially this started out as just a very simple doodle during this one coffee break at the office, but in the following days I just kept adding some details to it: a shadow here, a shadow there, a tongue, a jaw and finally some color. So it’s safe to say this wasn’t a really thought-through illustration. Even so, I figured I’d give it a try turning it into a vectored design and it seems to have turned out pretty well I guess.

Hopsylvania

This started off as a label idea for home brewed beer but ended up a full-blown branding project involving logo design, print, web and more. You can read about the project in this case study or head on over to Spreadshirt for shirts, tank tops, buttons and more things carrying the Transylvanian hops bat.

Juicy!

This is my very first digital illustrations. The whole idea started out of a simple doodle I was doing—while waiting for Photoshop to render a very large banner—and gained more and more elements until it got to what you see. At first I was just sketching a tongue, then a mouth, eyes and so on and before I knew it the bits and pieces turned into this really weird, perverted head on the paper that kind of resembled a… worm and the rest just followed from there.

Killing time

Just before going to sleep one night this idea came to mind about the letter “i” being killed by another letter. As usual I doodled it on my sketchbook so as not to loose it. It seemed like a fun thing to mess with and little by little I ended up with the result you see. First I was only planing on using the word “kill” but seeing as how I was supposed to be working on a project instead of killing time with this, I said to myself: why not?

Major W*O*O*D

This is an illustration I did during one of my holidays in Wien. After some drinks and laughs this idea popped out and I started to sketch it on my notebook, with the thought that I’d later make a digital version of it.

Morning wood

Meet the second part of the wood illustrations, the first being of course Major W*O*O*D. Just as the first cartoon was done, this one came out a day or so later and was something I couldn’t keep from drawing.

Not my type

Seeing as how in a great deal of projects I’m not immediately decided on the fonts I want to use, I spend quite some time searching and testing out what I think suits the project best. Although sometimes I know what I’m looking for and narrow down my search, the rest of the time I’m just experimenting with what I can find. I thought it would be funny to turn this whole thing into a cartoon, especially how when searching for a certain typeface, you have to take into account the combination you’ll be making in order to see which fonts are compatible and which aren’t.

Smiling green

This little turtle was drawn during a mini-vacation I took in Constanta, at the Black Sea. I didn’t intend to make it digital in the end, being just a simple sketch to pass the time. Lucky for the little green dude, a friend of mine took a peek at it in my sketchbook and seeing as how she’s mad about all things frog & turtle related, insisted I make a shirt out of it.

Sucker for you

My second ever digital illustration, this was inspired from the oh-so-hated mosquito that is really deeply in love with out blood. I don’t know why but my illustrations seem to get these weird twisted looks in the character’s eyes. Maybe that’s just how I see these guys as they keep pissing us off with their little annoying habits.

Vanilla

One evening, during my visit to Vienna in September 2012, I grabbed my sketchbook and started playing around on the paper with straight, slightly skewed lines, which later became the letter V. This got me thinking and drawing more, and while including some curved elements I thought about the vanilla sticks, slightly curved at the end and laid side by side. As one thing let to another, this lettering experiment took shape and later got turned into a digital version.
